What happened to Butter?

Butter closed its standalone platform in February 2026 after joining Miro, and its facilitation tools now live inside Miro Engage. If what you want is a simple, free video room to run your sessions in – rather than a broader collaboration suite – Digital Samba picks up where Butter left off. 

Is Digital Samba a good replacement for Butter?

Yes. Digital Samba supports the same interactive session formats – workshops, training, live courses and team meetings – with the facilitation tools Butter users relied on, plus end-to-end encryption and full EU hosting on top. 

Does Digital Samba have breakout rooms, a whiteboard and polls like Butter?

Yes. You get breakout rooms for small-group work, a collaborative whiteboard, polls and Q&A, screen sharing, chat and live reactions – the core toolkit for running an interactive session, all in the browser. 

Do my participants need to download anything or create an account?

No. Anyone can join straight from their browser with a single link – no sign-up and no app required. An optional free account and app (in beta) add convenience for scheduling, but are never needed to start or join a call. 

Is Digital Samba really free?

Yes. The free plan needs no credit card and has no trial countdown. You can start and join calls at no cost, and invite your team without per-seat fees. 

Is there a time limit or a cap on participants?

No fixed time limit and no fixed participant cap on the free plan – so your longer workshops and larger sessions are not cut short. 

Where is my data hosted, and is Digital Samba GDPR-compliant?

Digital Samba is hosted entirely in the EU and is GDPR-compliant by design, with end-to-end encryption available on your calls. Your meeting data stays in Europe. 

Can I schedule sessions in advance for recurring workshops?

Yes. Scheduling is available in beta with a free account, so you can set sessions up ahead of time and share them with your group before you meet. 

How do I move from Butter to Digital Samba?
